Respect to a social champion

LOCAL hero Michael Bailey of Brunshaw Action Group has been honoured for his efforts in tackling anti-social behaviour and creating a safer community.

Michael, 41, who also works at the Burnley Youth Theatre, has been recognised for his "commitment, energy and courage" in taking a stand, working and setting up community projects to cut down juvenile nuisance and crime across the Pennine division.

Nearly 600 nominations were received from individuals and community groups across England and Wales as part of the Respect Awards for Taking A Stand and 373 winners were chosen, including Michael.

Michael received the award, signed by PM Tony Blair, for organising events to prevent young people from committing anti-social behaviour. Michael runs large scale events such as The Burnley Community Carnival, The Home Front Experience and Bridging the Gap project.

Brunshaw Action Group was set up in September 2000 to cut down juvenile crime and nuisance set up by the residents with Lancashire Constabulary.

The group works across the Pennine police division and offers support to other voluntary residents' groups who are setting up groups in their area.

Mr Bailey said: "I am pleased to receive the award and thank the management committee, volunteers and paid members of staff for all their support to make projects and events happen.

"My thanks to chairwoman Diane Duckworth for her hard work. Everyone who works in Brunshaw Action Group is valuable to the organisation.'
