Brunshaw Action Group received the Queen Golden Jubilee Award for 2005 for voluntary service

Her Majesty The Queen announced on 30th April 2002 the creation of a new, annual Award to mark the occasion of her Golden Jubilee.

The Award recognises the vital role played by the hundreds of thousands of ‘unsung heroes’ of the voluntary and community world and emphasises the importance of continuing recognition of their work.

The Award covers groups operating in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

The number of Awards made each year will be determined by the number and quality of nominations received. Awards are made to groups rather than to individuals.

Building Stronger Burnley Communities Award
Winner - Brunshaw Action Group

COMMUNITY champions of all ages were lauded at the inaugural Better Burnley Awards.

The awards ceremony held at Burnley Mechanics celebrated groups and individuals who have "gone the extra mile to make Burnley a better place".

Set up by Burnley Action Partnership to challenge negative perceptions about the town, promote its attributes and improve the lives of local residents.

Hosted by BBC's Paul Crone at the Mechanics on Wednesday 12`March 2008, awards were given in recognition of good work done in the community and voluntary sector.

Mr Crone said: "There are major changes underway in Burnley, millions of pounds of investment are being spent on new homes; new schools; new college; university campus; new town centre and canalside developments.

"But buildings alone, don't make a town. Towns are shaped by the people who live in them, individuals and groups who work to make their town more caring, dynamic, clean, healthy and unique."

More than 100 nominations for Burnley and Padiham individuals and groups were submitted to judges, for 11 categories including Young Achievers Award, Business of the Year and Healthy Communities Award

All those nominated received a certificate of achievement.

Burnley Action Partnership includes representatives from Burnley Council, Lancashire County Council, Lancashire Police, Burnley Enterprise, Calico and Burnley College - the awards are part of a wider Better Burnley "pride campaign".

TACKLING ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR AND ITS CAUSES

These awards celebrate the bravery and courage of local people who have taken a stand against anti-social behaviour.

The Taking a Stand Awards are run in partnership with Crime Concern and recognise individuals and groups who have transformed their communities by tackling problems such as vandalism, nuisance neighbours, harassment, intimidation and graffiti.

Award winners are nominated by anti-social behaviour practitioners and members of the community who believe the person or group deserves recognition for their efforts to tackle problems.

Local Heroes
ITV Granada viewers nominated more than 200 people as local heroes who help others in their communities. Granada Reports profiled 12 short-listed candidates and viewers voted for the five they felt had made the greatest contribution. Viewers and celebrity judges chose 15-year-old Jordan Dean as the winner, awarding him Ł3,000 for the Brunshaw Action Group in Burnley where he volunteers. The Group encourages young people from different ethnic backgrounds to work together by participating in community theatre.

College student meets the Queen!
Jordan met model and TV presenter Nell McAndrew

A student from Burnley College who was named as Lancashire’s ‘Young Citizen of the Year’ took a trip to London recently where he met the Queen and some of the country’s most important politicians.

Jordan Dean, who is studying AS Levels at the College was taken to Buckingham Palace courtesy of ITV, after he won Granada’s ‘Local Hero’ award. Whilst there, he met regional ‘Local Heroes’ from around the country as well as some of Britain’s most famous faces.

These included the Queen, Prince Philip and the Duchess of Wessex as well as Michael Howard and Gordon Brown. Members of the ITV’s Coronation Street were also present as well as model and TV presenter Nell McAndrew. Former NBA star, John Amaechi who was one of the Granada ‘Local Heroes’ judges, was also present at the Palace.

Jordan said it was a great experience to meet the Queen:

“To meet someone as important as the Queen was a fantastic opportunity. I hadn’t known I’d be going until the day before so it all came as a bit of a surprise. But everyone was very nice and there was a whole range of people there.

“I talked to the Duchess of Wessex for about five minutes and she was really interested in my work with the Brunshaw Action Group. She took a few details about the work we do and where we are so there’s every chance that she’ll be paying us a visit in the future.”

Jordan won his ‘Local Hero’ and the ‘Lancashire Citizen of the Year’ awards for his work with the Brunshaw Action Group, his local youth club and ‘Breaking Barriers in Burnley’ – a group of local young people helping to combat racism in the town.

Later this month, Jordan will collect a Princess Diana Memorial Young Persons Award at a presentation evening at his former school, Towneley High. Jordan would like to be a Youth Worker after completing a degree in the future
